Improve your health with Healthy eating

Updated: Oct 8

Before we start to improve our health we should know the truth about healthy eating, body detox and fix our unhealthy habits.

Here is a list of things we should avoid especially during fasting or detox.

1. Alcohol

Every time you consume alcohol, your liver works overtime to break down the alcohol in your system. Alcohol is a diuretic too – making your kidneys throw out more fluids, along with some vital nutrients. This is what causes you to feel dehydrated the morning after. Avoiding alcohol for a few days gives your system a much-needed break.

2. Sugar

Cutting back on sugar is an easy way to cut back on unwanted calories. Foods that are high in sugar are quick to give an energy boost as the sugar gets absorbed quickly into the bloodstream. You feel the boost of energy till the blood sugar levels are high but soon the levels fall and you could feel slow and tired. When detoxing – stay away from high-sugar foods. During fasting too, avoiding over sugary drinks is advisable.

3. Meat, dairy and processed food

Meat slows down digestion, clogs up the bowels and helps bacteria to breed in your guts.

Milk, cheese and other dairy products are acidic to the body, leading to poor cell function and the slowing down of detoxification.

"Processed food" includes food that has been cooked, canned, frozen, packaged or changed in nutritional composition with fortifying, preserving or preparing in different ways. Any time we cook, bake or prepare food, we're processing food.

Highly processed foods include:

  • sugary drinks

  • candies

  • ice cream and frozen desserts

  • fast foods like French fries and burgers

  • frozen entrées like pasta dishes and pizzas

  • bakery products like muffins, buns and cakes

  • processed meats like sausages and deli meats

4. Avoid cooking in the microwave

Microwaves destroy the nutrients in your food, increasing your risk of nutrient deficiencies. Microwaves cause plastic containers to release harmful chemicals into your food.

5. Fats

Healthy eating avoids bad fats. Bad Fats are Saturated and trans fats. Good fats include monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Bad ones include industrial-made trans fats. Saturated fats fall somewhere in the middle. Most saturated fats are animal fats. They’re found in high-fat meats and dairy products.

Saturated fat sources include:

  • fatty cuts of beef, pork, and lamb

  • dark chicken meat and poultry skin

  • high-fat dairy foods (whole milk, butter, cheese, sour cream, ice cream)

  • tropical oils (coconut oil, palm oil, cocoa butter)

  • lard
